I’m really sad this class is coming to an end. I’ve really enjoyed this class, in large part due to my wonderful classmates and teacher. Through this course I think I’ve really grown as a reader, writer, speaker, and community member. I have always enjoyed analysing writing, but I’ve never worked on analysing writing for persuasive techniques. Rhetorical analysis is an important skill to learn. There are so many persuasive techniques used in every aspect of our lives; advertisements, the news, art, even everyday objects. It is important to know when and how rhetoric is being used to avoid ignorance and manipulation.
In my college career I will have to do lots of academic writing. Persuasive techniques are integral to a well written and convincing essay. My main takeaway from this class is the importance of pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos, ethos, and logos are the building blocks of a persuasive argument. In every piece I analyzed for this class the three appeals were used in some form.
I have plans to go to law school after college, where I will have to use rhetorical techniques everyday. If I plan to go into law rhetoric will become my life. This class is the beginning of a lifetime of learning the art of persuasion. Rhetoric will also be a large part of my personal life. As I stated earlier, rhetoric is all around us constantly. I hope to continue to learn more about the art of persuasion to both advance my career and understand the world around me.
The switch to online courses was difficult for me. For many of my courses the lack of in person classes largely affected my learning. This course was not too difficult in regards to online learning, but I did miss my classmates. I really appreciated the zoom sessions, as they gave me a chance to reconnect with the class. Thanks for everything!
